The lyrics re-write competition was held in January this year.  On this occasion, we have invited 4 very special guests. All of them were the contestants of the competition who are talented in lyrics writing.  In the program, they will share with us their special techniques used in lyrics writing as well as their aspiration in music.

Interviewees’ Profiles

  1. Julia (Best Singer), HD in Digital Music and Media
  2. Crystal (2nd Runner-up), HD in Digital Music and Media
  3. Shiyin (Best lyrics), HD in Visual Communication
  4. Trin (Guest Musician), HD in Digital Music and Media

Julia, Trin, Crystal (back)

 DJ Tommy, Minnie, Shiyin (front)

When asked why they were interested in joining this competition, all of them have different reasons.  Some joined because they simply wanted to have fun. “I didn’t write lyrics before. I had so much fun in the competition”, said Shiyin.  However, for contestant Trin, he joined because the competition coincided with almost the same as what he was doing at the time.  They chose to re-write the lyrics for the songs that are very meaningful to them. “I chose Olivia Ong’s Sweet Melody. It’s a Japanese song. I can’t sing Japanese, so I can sing and share this song to my friends”, said Crystal.

“Are there any special techniques for lyrics writing?”

Sometimes, people attend master lectures, professional workshops or seminars hoping to get a glimpse of the trade secrets or survival tools of the masters.  When asked to share their special techniques used for lyrics writing, to our surprise, they could not recall any such tools or techniques in particular, “the lyrics just come to my mind, and I didn’t think about it deeply”, said Julia.  Probably they performed well naturally and won the competition due to their talent. Furthermore, it is gratifying to know that they have managed to apply what they have learnt in classes (for the music students) in the competition.  Eventually, they revealed more about the techniques used for winning this competition.  Tune in the program for more details.

A career in music?  Perhaps not for everybody.

Musicians often work freelance. They are paid on a per project basis.  Most parents expect their children to get a permanent job with stable income after they have gone through tertiary education.  It seems that working freelance in the music industry is somewhat contrary to what most parents expect.  In the program, the contestants share the challenges they face, the difficulties they had with families, and the worries that they had in pursuing a career in music, their dream.  “My mum does not support me to be a musician!” said Crystal.

“My grandpa is a music composer.  He didn’t make a lot of money, so he didn’t let me learn music,” as revealed by the host.  “Most people simply think that we are messing about, fooling around”, said Trin.

We thank the contestants for their sharing and wish them every success in the future.  Stay tuned for more exciting radio programs.

Lin Lok Lok

Lin Lok Lok, the band who blew us away last year, came back to Radio 708 recently, better than ever. While last year they treated us to a sensitive rendition of a Coldplay favorite, this year they have come with an original song, titled “Kalea”, played by the full band.

They also talk about their post-graduation plans. All the members have enjoyed their time studying at HKDI/IVE(LWL), but they are also very excited to take their first steps as graduates. Hear them discuss their future plans, which range from traveling the world, to making it big in Hollywood, to eating lots of ice cream (???). To each their own!

And, of course, listen to their amazing song below. It is a bouncy, ska-inspired juggernaut with a couple of fiery guitar solos, catchy (English) lyrics and a foot-tapping, syncopated rhythm section.

As ever, Lin Lok Lok are:

Fung Yui Chung 61336/2A CDM

The lyrics of “Kalea”, written by Samuel Fung, are:

Kalea

Song and lyric by: Samuel Fung

V1
The night I sat there with you
Like a friend we were just chatting
Generally I shouldn’t fall in that

Now you cross my mind each day
It’s like a wave of poison
Killing me your whisper in my ear
Per.c 1
Please shining star don’t go
leaving those pains and me
The days we’re dreaming of
Never never ever I won’t let go
C1.
Here’s the situation
The ways of letting go or not
But no matter what you choose
I can’t walk away

The fate is never turns red
It’ll bring us back as usual
As it certainly is
Kalea stay with me ever more
V2.
The night was getting late so
I let her wear my old coat
The first time she lay on my arm

I still remember your face
Slept in my shoulder quietly
Slowly whispered the three words in my heart
Pre.c2
Please shining star don’t go
leaving those pains and me
The days we’re dreaming of
Never never ever I won’t let go
C2.
Here’s the situation
The ways of letting go or not
But no matter what you choose
I can’t walk away

The fate it never turns red
It’ll bring us back as usual
As it certainly is
Kalea stay with me ever more
B.
Walking along
Shaking alone baby
I was a fool I can’t see that
the tears down your face
“Goodbye” that’s how you’ve spoken
Sorry my dear
Sorry my dear I know
You have been holding so long
Now let me come back
“hey bai” let me love you
C3
Here’s the situation
The ways of letting go or not
But no matter what you choose
I can’t walk away

The fate is never turns red
It’ll bring us back as usual
As it certainly is
Kalea stay with me and never let go
C4
The situation
The ways of letting go or not
But no matter what you choose
I can’t walk away

The fate it never turns red
It’ll bring us back as usual
As it certainly is
Kalea stay with me ever more

Many thanks again to Lin Lok Lok! Keep on rocking!

Last year saw the first large-scale musical staged by the Language Centre and other departments here at HKDI/IVE(LWL). The musical, titled “When We Were, Now We Are,” provided a platform for some of the campus’ most talented students to showcase their abilities. The musical was created by Language Centre teachers Christine Tsang, Aristophanes Ng and Laurence Li, with help from the students.

In the studio this week, four of the stars of the musical came by to talk about their experience performing on such a large stage (in English) and to play a song from the show.

The students talked about how the musical, which deals with young people trying to follow their dreams against the wishes of their parents, told a story to which they could personally relate. They too have had to fight to follow their dreams, and talked a little about the challenges of pursuing a life in the creative fields they love, especially when expectations from family and other pressures are pushing you in a more traditional direction.

The students also expressed their thanks to the LC teachers for all their support and hard work, and even gave some advice to students who may want to take part in a production like “When We Were, Now We Are,” but who may lack the confidence in English to audition and perform.

The students on stage

Many thanks from Radio 708 to these students. They were real professionals and a lot of fun to talk to. They are:

Cheng Ka Wing, Kelly 61353-3A FID
Cheung Lok Yan, Rosalia 21905F-3C BA
Yu Wing Kan, Dominic 61336-3B CDM
Pau Chung Yan, Lydia 61336-3B CDM

Listen to their interview and performance below. The lyrics to “I Dreamed a Dream” can be found here.

The talented and endearing Caterpillar, CDM’s very own all-girl acoustic supergroup, dropped by the studio to chat with Jeannette and to treat us to their version of the Russian Red song “The Sun, The Trees”.

Caterpillar in the studio

As you can hear in the clip below, Caterpillar’s is a delicate and lighthearted style played on acoustic instruments.  They have described their style as “colourful, vivid and cheerful”.

Indeed, the girls’ sunny dispositions made the session a joy to work on, and you can hear that positivity coming through in their performance.

Don’t forget to check out and “like” Caterpillar’s facebook page. Keep up to date with their latest news and show some support to a great local band!

Stella Lau of the Language Centre, her drum teacher and studio owner Jon Lee,  and some very musical students  got together on the anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death to pay tribute in song. In the clip below you can hear the results, as Stella sings a Nirvana classic. There then follows a fascinating interview with Jon, who gives an insider’s view on how the music industry is changing both in Hong Kong and in Mainland China. Finally, this clip ends with a fiery, technically flawless drum solo.

The Nirvana  song in this clip is “About a Girl”, from Nirvana’s first album, Bleach. You can read along to the lyrics here.

The students involved are Brian Ho and Wallace Chan, both from class 61976S in the CDM Department. Thanks for your help guys!

Lin Lok Lok came by the studio to record the recent Coldplay hit “Fix You” (listen below) and to chat with Kent and Jeannette about their different roles in the band, which artists inspire them, and what it’s like to be a young band in Hong Kong. They also speak about why they chose to cover this song, such as its ability to inspire people to overcome the difficulties in their life.

The group has 7 members, including two lead vocalists, guitarists, and a bassist, as well as some percussion, so it was a real challenge for our student production team from the MIT department. However, as you can hear from the recording, they succeeded brilliantly.

It’s an intimate version of a stadium ballad, and it’s preceded by a funny and candid interview with most of the band.

CDM student Benz gets sensitive with a touching version of the classic George Benson tune “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love for You“. The Language Centre’s very own Laurence Li accompanies Benz on piano, while Kent and the MIT students created the rest of the backing track.

This was one of the first recordings we ever did here at Radio 708, and we thank everyone involved (especially Benz!!) for doing such a good job.

Here are the lyrics if you’d like to sing along!
