"Living Lounge" are making some noise on campus

In the second half of our Open Day 2012 coverage (part one can be found here), we continue to explore the many interesting projects, pursuits and promotions staged by students of HKDI/IVE(LWL). Saturday saw even more members of the public strolling around campus, and students from every department came together to make sure all our guests had a memorable day.

VAC students showing off their "wearable art"

In this episode we speak to some students making “wearable art”, others who are finding inspiration for functional furniture in found objects, fashion students making the world more beautiful one face at a time, and (of course) some who are following their musical muse.

Living Lounge, whose Facebook page is here, blew away a small crowd with a catchy and very tight original composition. Later, Lydia Pau, who was featured in an earlier Radio 708 post, gave an intimate and uncommonly soulful performance of the classic ballad “Desperado“.

Caterpillar welcomed guests under the escalator

Caterpillar, also former Radio 708 contributors, played originals and covers to guests as they entered the campus, their sunny songs echoing all through the main boulevard.

All in all, Open Day 2012 was a huge success, providing more interesting sights and sounds than we could capture, despite our best efforts. It is a tribute to the hard work of all the students (and staff!) that contribute to making HKDI/IVE(LWL) such a vibrant and fun campus. We’re counting down the days until next year! It was, in addition,  also a reminder that we should all take advantage of the fact that so many interesting people in so many fields are working so closely together here, and always be discovering and rediscovering our own campus.

Behind the scenes before the PID fashion show

Open Day 2012 was a huge success here at HKDI/IVE(LWL), bringing in hundreds of family members, curious members of the public, prospective students and neighborhood residents. The two-day event allowed our uniquely eclectic and creative students to show off the fruits of their hard work. Strolling around campus on Friday and Saturday, you could be transported into deep space via MIT students, hear all types of great music (CDM students and others), learn three languages in a single day in the Language Centre’s CILL, and get a glimpse of the coming trends in eye-wear, jewellery and clothing (thanks to EMT, PID and FID students). Around every corner was a new surprise or a friendly and enthusiastic group of students. Part two can be found here.

So, with that in mind, Radio 708 sought to discover as much as possible by poking into every corner time would allow, and getting the students involved to explain their various projects.

Last year saw the first large-scale musical staged by the Language Centre and other departments here at HKDI/IVE(LWL). The musical, titled “When We Were, Now We Are,” provided a platform for some of the campus’ most talented students to showcase their abilities. The musical was created by Language Centre teachers Christine Tsang, Aristophanes Ng and Laurence Li, with help from the students.

In the studio this week, four of the stars of the musical came by to talk about their experience performing on such a large stage (in English) and to play a song from the show.

The students talked about how the musical, which deals with young people trying to follow their dreams against the wishes of their parents, told a story to which they could personally relate. They too have had to fight to follow their dreams, and talked a little about the challenges of pursuing a life in the creative fields they love, especially when expectations from family and other pressures are pushing you in a more traditional direction.

The students also expressed their thanks to the LC teachers for all their support and hard work, and even gave some advice to students who may want to take part in a production like “When We Were, Now We Are,” but who may lack the confidence in English to audition and perform.

The students on stage

Many thanks from Radio 708 to these students. They were real professionals and a lot of fun to talk to. They are:

Cheung Lok Yan, Rosalia 21905F-3C BA
Yu Wing Kan, Dominic 61336-3B CDM
Pau Chung Yan, Lydia 61336-3B CDM

Listen to their interview and performance below. The lyrics to “I Dreamed a Dream” can be found here.

11422995_999007936789479_1174562643_oProduced on the HKDI/IVE(LWL) campus, Radio 708 is a collaboration among students from many different areas of study. It has also been a joint effort supported by several departments. The Language Centre, Department of Information Technology and the Technical Support Unit have all come together to help make this project a success. It is a platform for our students to share their passion and expertise in a fun way.  It is student oriented. Our students are responsible for all production duties, including content development, recording and sound editing.

The name “Radio 708” speaks to the unique role the Centre for Independent Language Learning (C.I.L.L.), located in room B708, plays here at HKDI/IVE(LWL). Radio 708 was envisioned as an extension of this space, where any interested student can feel comfortable sharing with and learning from their classmates, while gaining valuable trade-specific experience, improving their confidence and language skills, and having fun. Please contact William Lai at williamlyy@vtc.edu.hk or Carrie So at carrieso@vtc.edu.hk if you have any questions or would like to get involved.

The talented and endearing Caterpillar, CDM’s very own all-girl acoustic supergroup, dropped by the studio to chat with Jeannette and to treat us to their version of the Russian Red song “The Sun, The Trees”.

Caterpillar in the studio

As you can hear in the clip below, Caterpillar’s is a delicate and lighthearted style played on acoustic instruments.  They have described their style as “colourful, vivid and cheerful”.

Indeed, the girls’ sunny dispositions made the session a joy to work on, and you can hear that positivity coming through in their performance.

Don’t forget to check out and “like” Caterpillar’s facebook page. Keep up to date with their latest news and show some support to a great local band!

the students stare lovingly into each other's eyes

In this episode, LC English teacher and  resident French expert Dale coaches some keen MIT students on the finer points of “The Beautiful Language”. Dale comes from Canada, where many people speak both English and French.

The students were instructed on how to make romantic overtures if in Paris, and they proved to be real naturals, telling each other with total sincerity about the love they had been keeping inside…

Much thanks to the students involved. Merci beaucoup! This was one of the most fun things we’ve done here at Radio 708. Of course, many thanks to Dale as well, for sharing his expertise — both linguistic and romantic!

Stella Lau of the Language Centre, her drum teacher and studio owner Jon Lee,  and some very musical students  got together on the anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death to pay tribute in song. In the clip below you can hear the results, as Stella sings a Nirvana classic. There then follows a fascinating interview with Jon, who gives an insider’s view on how the music industry is changing both in Hong Kong and in Mainland China. Finally, this clip ends with a fiery, technically flawless drum solo.

The Nirvana  song in this clip is “About a Girl”, from Nirvana’s first album, Bleach. You can read along to the lyrics here.

The students involved are Brian Ho and Wallace Chan, both from class 61976S in the CDM Department. Thanks for your help guys!

Lin Lok Lok came by the studio to record the recent Coldplay hit “Fix You” (listen below) and to chat with Kent and Jeannette about their different roles in the band, which artists inspire them, and what it’s like to be a young band in Hong Kong. They also speak about why they chose to cover this song, such as its ability to inspire people to overcome the difficulties in their life.

The group has 7 members, including two lead vocalists, guitarists, and a bassist, as well as some percussion, so it was a real challenge for our student production team from the MIT department. However, as you can hear from the recording, they succeeded brilliantly.

It’s an intimate version of a stadium ballad, and it’s preceded by a funny and candid interview with most of the band.
